Immigration legal help in Los Angeles

  • CHIRLA: (213) 201-3797 to request a consultation about legal services and immigration defense.
  • Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles (LAFLA): (800) 399-4529 to request help based on the type of case and eligibility rules.
  • CARECEN Los Angeles: (213) 385-7800, ext. 136, for information on immigration consultations and services.
  • Immigrant Defenders Law Center: (213) 833-8283, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Pacific time, if a family member was detained. The line provides resources; a call does not guarantee representation.

If a family member was detained

You can search for the person in the official ICE detainee locator using their A-number and country of birth, or their name, date of birth, and country of birth. Keep their full name, A-number, detention location, and information about needed medication. If they do not appear immediately, check again and ask for guidance.

Other rights and support organizations

La Unión del Pueblo Entero (LUPE), Rio Grande Valley, Texas: (956) 787-2233, San Juan office. Provides services and community organizing in its region; it is not the Los Angeles response line.

Human Rights Watch: documents human rights abuses. General New York office: (212) 290-4700; Los Angeles contact: la@hrw.org. It is not an emergency line or individual legal representation service.

Find help outside Los Angeles

The National Immigration Legal Services Directory lets you search for nonprofit organizations offering free or low-cost services by location. Call to confirm that they handle your type of case and have capacity.

Check who can represent you

  • If someone says they are a California attorney, check their license status with the State Bar of California.
  • If someone says they are an accredited representative, check their name and recognized organization on the Department of Justice rosters.
  • Ask for written details of services and fees, copies of everything filed, and receipts. Do not sign blank forms or hand over original documents without a record.

Work and discrimination

Other worker resources: National Domestic Workers Alliance and Centro Legal de la Raza. Confirm whether they serve your location and type of case.

If you face workplace problems, document what happened and keep messages, dates, payment records, and other documents. CHIRLA offers consultations on workers’ rights when employment and immigration issues overlap; contact its team to ask about availability. If the situation involves discrimination based on citizenship or immigration status at work, seek specialized guidance before filing a complaint.
